Critical Mass – Chief Smolka Retirement Party – February 23, 2007

February 23, 2007 · Posted in History · Comment

13th Precinct, NYC

RMO played a procession to the precinct house where a customized bicycle was offered to retiring police chief Smolka. Smolka was not on hand to accept his gift and the officers on duty declined to accept it for him. RMO played a short, unpermitted–and unmolested–set in front of the precinct.

Show @ LAVA collective in Philly

Friday, Feb 9
10 pm
Benefit for Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SLRP)
At the LAVA collective (www.lavazone.org/)
4134 Lancaster Ave., West Philly
Philadelphia, PA 19143
$5-10 sliding scale; no one turned away

Rumor has it that there is a ‘pre-show’ with two local bands and an art opening that will collide into our late show. We assume it be chaos, and if it isn’t, we’ll bring it.

This is a benefit for our friends At SLRP, since we’re missing their annual benefit in NYC this weekend.

SRLP works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.

ROC-NY Picket: Redeye Grill

February 1, 2007 · Posted in History, history-stub · Comment

Please join us in picketing the Redeye Grill this Thursday in support of members of the Restaurant Opportunites Center. Last time we picketed with ROC-NY was great: a crowd of pissed off Latino and Bengali workers, an inflatable cockroach, sketchy restaurant security videotaping the proceedings, grouchy cops, NY Times and NY Post reporters, truckers honking in supports, would-be customers turning around the sight of us, and a small clutch of counter-protesters dressed like militant anarchists waving Soviet flags (we shooed them away). Never a dull moment. Read more below.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
THURSDAY, FEB. 1st
7-8pm
REDEYE GRILL (56th and 7th Ave.)
(1/A/B/C/D to 59th St., Columbus Circle, or the N/R/Q/W to 57th St.)

From the organziers:

“Dear Friends of Restaurant Workers & ROC-NY,

As you know we have been fighting a huge campaign with 230 workers at 6
restaurants of the Fireman Hospitality Group (Redeye Grill, Shelly’s,
Trattoria Dell Arte, Café Fiorello, Brooklyn Diner, Bond 45) for stolen
tips, unpaid wages, racial discrimination, and sexual harassment. This
January, we finally forced the company into mediation, and stopped protests
in the meantime. Now, however, they are stalling, and we have to return IN
BIG FORCE. To force them to move quickly, we and the RUDE MECHANICAL
ORCHESTRA (a marching band) – will be protesting in front of the Redeye Grill.
PLEASE JOIN US – VICTORY IS NEAR!”
