Attracting hundreds of thousands of participants, the marches for immigration rights that took place on May 1st, 2006 in major cities across the United States stand out as one of the most impressive political mass-mobilizations in the past fifty years.
Currently on display by Art For Change at Carlitos Café y Galeria is a look at photographs taken during these marches as well as posters and art made this year for the May 1st event. Also, included in the exhibition are photographs from the visual component of the Dangerous Storytelling Workshop. This workshop was held in conjunction with the past exhibit Sed: A Trail of Thirst by Orlando Lara, organized as a way to talk about dangerous or risky subjects, especially those faced by immigrant youth.
Art for Change advocates reflection, dialogue, and action through the creative process. Art Belongs to Everyone, the curatorial program of Art For Change exhibits contemporary artists of diverse cultural backgrounds who use art as a tool for progressive social change. Exhibitions focus on emerging and established artists who are looking to create a challenging statement about contemporary history.

Swashbuckler’s Ball: Benefit for Miss Rockaway Armada
We in the RMO are a varied bunch, but we have some important things in common: we love the green and black, love peace and justice, love fabulous costumes, love to shake the booty and love boats and sustainability. A bunch of the above gets wrapped up into our next gig. The Miss Rockaway Armada is a crew of freaks, artists and adventurers that built rafts out of junk and floated partly down the Mississippi last year; this year they’re going back and shooting for New Orleans. The Armada includes members of the RMO.
As if seeing our lovin’ faces wasn’t enough, we will be joined by three great acts, including our compatriots in Veveritse (playing early at 9; including former/current members of RMO and the Hungry March Band), our friend Rench and new friends from Philly in Pony Pants. We’re on at 10:15. Don’t forget to dress up and don’t miss it!

Movimiento Por Justicia Del Barrio (MJB) is an immigrant-led social justice organization based in East Harlem. The group was founded in December of 2004 to organize resistance against the devastating effects of gentrification in their community. The immigrant base and leadership of their organization has led MJB to address the pressing issue of immigrant rights. In 2005, their predominantly Mexican membership decided to become adherents to Zapatista’s Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle and joined The Other Campaign, a national movement to change Mexico initiated by the Zapatistas. Since then, the group has facilitated a comprehensive Consulta Con El Barrio to invite popular community participation in developing strategyand focus for the struggle for community based justice. MJB struggles for justice by challenging systems of racism, xenophobia, sexism, classism, and homophobia.
