The (re)Cycle Plays

Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, Queens

The Confluence Theatre Company presents the (re)CYCLE PLAYS, a series of short
performances in diverse genres and artistic mediums.

In the 15th century, the original Cycle Plays were morality plays based on
biblical texts, from Creation to the Last Judgment. They were enacted by common
guildsmen and craftsmen on mounted stages that were moved around the city
streets on wagons. THE (re)CYCLE PLAYS will celebrate and “recycle” this
theatrical ritual while promoting sustainable practices as viable,
eco-effective solutions to today’s foremost moral issue – the ecological
degradation of our society.

Recycling play titles such as The Fall, The Last Judgment, and The Flood from
the original Cycle Plays, each performance will focus on a contemporary
morality issue such as peak oil, consumption, and food politics. Stage areas
created from reusable and recycled materials will be arranged in a circle and
the crowd will be directed to the various stage areas at performance times.

By using bio-diesel power, constructing all festival elements from reusable and
salvaged materials, and performing against nature’s backdrop, Confluence is
proud to present an event that is not only a great entertainment experience,
but also an example of a zero waste gathering that provides more than it
consumes, both physically and mentally.

Between plays, visit YE OLDE ECO-FAIRE, showcasing grassroots organizations
raising awareness, inspiring interest, and growing support for local
sustainability initiatives, along with a Green Kids’ Area.

Times Square Counter-Recruitment with the War Resister’s League

September 8, 2007 · Posted in History · Comment

The War Resisters blockaded the recruiting center, with two waves of arrests before shutting it down for the day. We showed up later in the day to help boost visibility and morale. “Patriotic” counter-protesters called us “Traitors dressed up like clowns.”

ROC-NY Picket: Cafe Fiorello

Cafe Fiorello, NYC

Months and months ago, restaurant workers entered mediation in good faith with
culinary emperor Shelly Fireman to settle claims of stolen tips, unpaid wages,
and pervasive racial discrimination and sexual harassment at his restaurants.
Fireman’s tarrying in mediation has now compelled workers and their supporters
to resume protests in front of his cafes.  Join the Rude Mechanical Orchestra
in supporting the workers Thursday September 6 as they show Fireman that power
lies beyond the careful auspices of the conference room.
