Let me just start by letting you know that we’re pulling out all the stops for
this one. We’ve been looking forward to HONK! for months and… well, if you’re
not there, we *might* bring some of this honking love back to NYC with us when
we return…
The weekend begins with a symposium discussion of the underground street band
movement hosted by the Tufts Music Department, and continues with the RMO (and
others) playing late-night at the Abbey Lounge. Then on Saturday, SEVENTEEN
brass & marching bands play all around Davis Square. In the evening, open
HONK! at the VFW Dilboy Hall. Sunday opens with a parade through Somerville
and Cambridge, led by “Click and Clack,” The Tappet Brothers, and joined by
many fabulous groups, then bands on stage at Oktoberfest in Harvard Square.
This whole weekend is interspersed with workshops and spontaneous honking!

The New York City Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual, Queer Domestic Violence
Taskforce presents Real Lives, Real Survivors: From Policy to Practice, the
Second Annual Conference on LGBTQ Intimate Partner and Domestic Violence. The
Real Lives, Real Survivors conference will explore issues surrounding domestic
violence in lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and queer (LGTBQ) communities
in New York City. We hope to foster healing and empowerment for LGTBQ survivors
of domestic violence by raising awareness of the dynamics of domestic violence
in the context of LGTBQ relationships; increasing the accessibility to services
for LGTBQ survivors of domestic violence; and ensuring that those services are
informed by innovative best-practice models. The conference format includes
plenary sessions, workshops and social activities designed to increase
awareness and a greater sense of community.
Opening remarks by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and closing
performance by the Rude Mechanical Orchestra.
Service Provider $35, Students $15, Community members (open to the public) $5
but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
